Meet Garlande

Garlande's Psychology Today Profile

Garlande Powell has her master’s in social work from East Carolina University. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed School Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Abuse Specialist (LCAS), Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS), Internationally Certified Advanced Alcohol & Drug Counselor (ICAADC), and Internationally Certified Clinical Supervisor (ICCS). Garlande began her social work career in group homes in North Carolina. After her marriage, she turned to the geriatrics field as a nursing home social worker. Garlande then transitioned into the role of social work case manager of children and adults with developmental disabilities within a state entity. When it was time for her internship in the master’s program, she transitioned to a position as a mental health worker within the same state entity. Due to reform, Garlande left state mental health and moved to school social work until the birth of her daughter. Garlande then changed to part-time with a grant position for substance abuse screening at a local department of social services and was an adjunct professor for the Master of Social Work program at East Carolina University. Once the grant ended, Garlande went into private practice for herself with like-minded Christian professionals for about nine years. Garlande then left private practice at the beginning of 2017 to join CareNet, which is a non-profit, faith-based arm of Wake Forest Baptist Hospital recently purchased by Atrium. Garlande worked in the Wilmington CareNet office for over five years until God provided the opportunity to go back into private practice in December of 2022.

During Garlande’s career, she was appointed by Governor Pat McCroy in 2014 and reappointed by Governor Roy Cooper in 2017 to the North Carolina Social Work Certification and Licensure Board (NCSWCLB) for a three-year term for each appointment. Garlande served as Vice-Chair of this board from July 1, 2015, through November 4, 2016, when she was voted as Chair of this board and served as Chair until June 30, 2020. Garlande’s service on the board spanned over six years, from July 1, 2014, to September 11, 2020. During this time Garlande had the opportunity to attend and speak at the National Association of Social Workers’ Clinical Supervision Conference several different years as Chair of the NCSWCLB. Garlande also represented the State of North Carolina as the Delegate with the Association of Social Work Boards for several years and worked with their task force to promote the mobility and portability of North Carolina Social Work Licensure across state lines and internationally.

Garlande currently serves New Hanover County and surrounding counties with in-person sessions. She also provides telehealth through a HIPPA-compliant Video/Audio platform to North Carolina Residents. Garlande provides supervision to LCSWAs, LCASAs, and CCSAs. She believes God has called her to this work and views it as a ministry, not a job. Garlande has a passion for helping others restore their souls to health and peace.
